01 — About Home & Backyard

We help you love every square foot of home

Since 2012, HomeAndBackyard has tested tools, planted hundreds of beds, built decks, pergolas and raised gardens — so you don't have to learn the hard way. We're homeowners, gardeners and weekend builders obsessed with practical comfort.

We believe a great home doesn't end at the back door. Your backyard can be a second living room, a playground, a vegetable farm and a quiet retreat — all at once. We show step-by-step how, with honest costs, materials and mistakes to avoid.

Everything about budgets, seasons, tools and where to start if your yard is a blank lawn.

Backyard ideas
How much does a small backyard makeover cost? +
A cozy refresh (paint, plants, lights, second-hand furniture) starts at $300–$800. A new paver patio or deck runs $1,500–$6,000 depending on size and materials. We always give 3 budget tiers in each guide.
I'm a total beginner — where do I start? +
Start with clean-up + one zone: a 3x3m lounge corner or one raised bed. Our step 01 planner helps map sun, water and traffic before you spend a dollar.
What grows easily with little maintenance? +
Native grasses, lavender, hostas, hydrangeas, rosemary and cherry tomatoes. Mulch thickly, water deeply but rarely, and choose perennials over annuals.
Do I need permits for deck or pergola? +
Often yes for structures over 30cm high or attached to the house. Check local codes first — we include a permit checklist in every build guide.
How often do you publish new guides? +
Every week: seasonal tasks on Mondays, DIY builds on Thursdays. Bookmark our journal and check the latest stories above.
