Unit makeup/war strategy

I'm pretty new to the game, played a few alliance games with my friends who aren't very good either so I managed to win but playing in actual lobbies with people above level 70 and they are just so dominant at war. Is the strat to just stack loads of different units and send it to rampage across someone else's cities? Or are they making a mistake and I'm not good enough to punish it?
