"It makes no sense to bring Encanto into the Descendants universe, Encanto is set in modern times". Bitch, Encanto is set in the same time period as 101 Dalmatians.

Bottom line:

Do you know the opening sequence of Encanto (or even the sequence near the end of the movie, during the Dos Oruguitas song) that shows young Alma and Pedro escaping their town, when they show us how Encanto was created in the first place? Well, basically that entire sequence is based on real events from the Colombian civil war. The movie doesn't give an exact time period because as I understand it, Colombia experienced numerous civil wars in the past. However, I saw several videos about it from Colombian people at the time the movie was released, explaining the historical context and setting behind the movie (note: I'm not Colombian, I'm Argentinian): basically, due to the lack of modern technology during Alma and Pedro's chase sequence and the fact that soldiers were still riding horses and using swords, it's possible that the Civil War depicted is la Guerra de los Cien Días, which took place between 1899 and 1902. As a result, since the enchanted candle has been lit for 50 years, the current events of the movie would have taken place sometime between 1949 and 1952.

On the other hand, we have the 101 Dalmatians movie, canonically set in November 1958 (the date can be seen in the actual movie in the newspaper the morning after the puppies are stolen).

This means that both Carlos and Luis come from the same time in history, approximately. At least their stories do. Not that it matters too much either, considering that in this universe we have different children of animated characters from any point in history gathered in the modern era, with modern technology and inventions. But I mean, I REALLY feel like a lot of people are just looking to hate Descendants 5 just because. They really have NO reason to do so. We've only just had the first casting announcement. We know absolutely nothing about the development of the story, or the characters. The movie only started production two days ago. We don't even have a single trailer yet. Fuck, we don't even know the official title yet! And yet I see dozens of posts or people in comments just criticizing the idea just because, without giving the new characters a chance to even introduce themselves.

Is the difference because Encanto was released very recently and we don't know if there will be a second movie?

  • Okay, but that doesn't matter, because since Descendants 2 it was confirmed that the animated sequels are not canon in this universe.

Why did they give Hook a "fourth daughter" when we already knew two of Harry's sisters in the other media of the franchise?

  • Because again, since Descendants 2, it was confirmed that Wicked World is not canon with the live action movies, and the books, while written as prequels, are not really canon either because (as I explained to some people in the comments) they have too many contradictions for one to say "hey, this is canon in the movies, but this isn't": The Queen of Hearts was locked away on the Isle in the books, and was a teacher at Dragon Hall. Mal's father was a mortal man in the books, not Hades. So no, Hazel is the first sister we'll meet of Harry in the live action universe of the franchise.

Also, you should keep in mind that Chloe and Red changed the course of time in D4, so anything we might have previously considered canon may have been modified as a butterfly effect of their actions. Pink is the clearest example of this.

As I've said in a few other comments: Encanto was one of Disney's highest-grossing original (i.e. non-sequel) movies of the past five years. It was a hit at the box office, and with the public as well. Luisa Madrigal's dolls were the most purchased among little girls, even more than Isabela's or Mirabel's. So it's not a surprise that Disney decided to give Luisa a son here. You have to remember that these movies are aimed at the new generation, kids who probably grew up watching post-2010 movies like Princess & the Frog, Frozen, Moana, Raya and Encanto, rather than the original Disney classics. The target audience of this franchise is no longer focused on those of us who were kids back in 2015. Changes aren't bad, you guys. We should stop criticizing everything just because things aren't the way we want them to be. Or at least, if you're going to criticize anyway, at least find better arguments than "It's a modern movie" when it's set in the same era as the origin story of the best character in the original core four.
