My honest opinion on Dragon Ball Daima
I'll point out right from the start that I don't take Dragon Ball Super into account when judging this series, because it's just not the same continuity. Let's judge things for what they actually are.
And Daima.... is actually a pretty good continuation of Majin Buu Saga, but unfortunately it still doesn't deal with some problems. And I guess I'll start with those problems of mine, because there are actually some of them too.
So the negatives:
- The pace in the middle part of the series. Roughly from the moment of the planet of giants, until the start fight with Gomah. It wasn't bad, it was just disastrous. So many wasted episodes that could have been used for some meaningful exposition or just more action.
- Vegeta's SSJ3 design. I don't want to dwell on this. Simply put, the guy doesn't look like SSJ3, but more like some SSJ 2.5. Fatal as a child, a little better as an adult, but it's just not that. You don't change things that work.
- I have to mention this. Artstyle, but not as a whole. It's just that little SSJ1 Goku so often looked so plastic, oily. Well it shone as if it had been greased with oil. This wasn't just a problem with the SSJ1 Goku Mini, but it's mainly what I associate it with.
- Overuse of problems with the ship.
- I wouldn't consider it a full flaw, but I think the series would simply do better if it didn't turn everyone into children.
- Piccolo. Starting with his mediocre participation and forgetting that he could speak the Namekian language because he did it in the OG at 23 TB. Noting that while the participation itself doesn't particularly interest me because Piccolo is not some top character of mine, the don't remember language was just abysmal.
Well, and I guess that's about it for the flaws.
It's time to move on to the best, because there was much more.
Positives:
- Opening, Ending and generally the entire soundtrack of the series. I was skeptical at first, but the longer I heard it the more it sat in my ears. I can't wait for the release of the Soundtrack.
- - I also liked that she devoted some episodes to explaining the lore, exploring the world presented. Something that hasn't been done in a long time and was even a little hard to get used to. But I think the series found a good balance between lore and pure action.
- Goku's Characterization. The thing that bothered me immensely in modern Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball Super regardless of whether it's a manga, anime or cinematic, broken this issue all over the place. And Dragon Ball Daima actually gave him honor again. He wasn't stupid, he could devise a plan, he was quick to catch the facts, and on top of that he had a lot of his badass moments like the battle in the hotel, the fight with Glorio, and the last 3-4 episodes in general. On top of that, he was a bit more aloof from mindless fighting which was consistent with his personality from Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Here as an example, the fact that he wasn't too eager to spar with Glorio.
- Bulma and Vegeta's relationship and also their characterization. Here I do not want to elaborate so much, who remembers certain gags knows. And in terms of characterization, Vegeta seemed a bit more consistent with Buu Saga Vegeta, who distanced himself more from the pursuit of Goku.
- The humor was the best in a long time. Very Toriyama-esque, the kind of downright primitive humor that I'm a huge fan of.
- Glorio vs Goku deserves an honorable mention. This is probably one of the best fights I've seen in modern Dragon Ball. Everything played into it starting with the music, going through the characterization, choreography and ending with the incredibly polished animation.
- Dragon Ball Daima, is a series that goes back to the 90s to when SSJ1, SSJ2, SSJ3 and SSJ4 were the peak. It was nice to see how once again, it's these forms that play a major role. I'm not too much of a fan of the new forms, so I was immensely pleased to see that we're back again to the days when blondes and ape men were wreaking havoc. SSJ3 wasn't even in DBZ that got the kind of valuable airtime that Daima served up. This is a huge plus.
- Animation. It was good when it was supposed to be good and peaked at many specific moments, most notably the action sequences. Definitely the best animated Dragon Ball we've gotten
- All the rest of the fights such as the fights with Tamagami, all the fights towards the end, the Duu vs Tamagami 3 fight, even such a short sequence as Goku's battle in the hotel was amazingly done.
- New characters. I was skeptical at first, but Daima proved to me that my fears were both justified and unfounded. Because on the one hand we have such bad characters as Degesu, but on the other hand we have characters like Glorio, or those two Majin Kuu and Duu. With special emphasis on Glorio, whom I really liked. He even scored some character development throughout the series, and his fighting style is quite spectacular.
- And of course, the icing on the cake is the last 3 episodes, with special emphasis on the last 2 episodes. I won't hide the return of SSJ4 made this series for me. I don't know when was the last time I enjoyed Dragon Ball so much. Probably all the other merits wouldn't have been so meaningful in the context of the whole if it weren't for the fact that the ending was very good. But when you know you've traveled a certain path and at the end of that path there's such a masterpiece waiting for you, it just makes you want to watch.
- And then there's the ending itself, which combined some epicness with a bit of humor and such wholesome atmosphere, and has already made itself a standalone new sequel for good, allowing for more adventures for Goku, the crew and his SSJ4. I mean Goku who knows SSJ4, Vegeta from SSJ3, Bulma using rejuvenating bugs, separated Kibitoshin. I'm glad we have a new continuum.
I also encourage you to share your opinion on Dragon Ball Daima.
