Failed driving test for being cautious
I took my first driving test in 2019, failed and I admit I was terrible, missed stopping at a solid line at a T junction. Lots of things needed fixing but thankfully my progress was good, only 3 grade 2 marks.
Since then I’ve had another test and failed again, practiced like crazy, worked with instructor to fix all the the other mistakes I make with observation, signalling, stopping correctly, positioning.
Now, I’ve failed for progress. Everything else is good apparently with a couple grade 2 faults for small things, but I got 8 points for progress because I was too cautious. I slowed down to observe turns where there was poor visibility, slowed down at roundabouts to take it safely and to observe, and on the straight because there were speed bumps. On questioning this the examiner just says I should have driven around the mini bumps and just gone confidently into the turns. I tried to explain the visibility but he didn’t budge.
Honestly it feels like each examiner has a different thing they’re sticklers for, even when you’re a safe driver they want you to be more fast, if you’re fast they want you to be more safe.
It also feels like they are purposefully trying to fail 50% of people every day, because I have friends who have stalled the car, hit the kerb at speed, and made other mistakes that have still passed.
Edit to add, I was borderline passing but I was given so many points for progression that it pushed me over the edge. If I was marked by an examiner who is less crazy about progress I think I’d have passed easily.
