Criminal defense - lack of new attorneys?
I am 3 years out of law school doing criminal defense in a small city (300,000 people). I work in a private office but take court appointments. Since I've joined the defense bar here, no new attorneys have joined and many other young attorneys have gone into other areas. There are only probably 3-5 other attorneys, including at the PD's office, under the age of 40 who do criminal defense. Has anyone else seen a lack of new attorneys going into criminal defense? Does anyone predict a gap in criminal defense lawyers once the older generation retires?
It seems to me that my generation is more interested in work/life balance and a supportive work environment where we are treated well. This doesn't always seem to be present in criminal defense jobs. Just something I am curious about!
