What is this for on my washing machine

My girlfriend has moved into a new flat and the old Tennant left her a washing machine

I connected the water hose and the waste tube up but when she used it water leaked (leaked out the front she said so thank god it wasn't my dodgy plumbing)

Anyway the machine has a hose sticking out the front that's usually covered in any images of the model I find online
