Why do Americans care so much about politics?

Hi I am from Portugal and I have seen so many stories of people stopping being friends with each other, couples breaking up, divorces all because of different political views? I understand wanting what’s better for your country etc. but getting to a point where you are wiling to over look other people’s qualities over political views seems odd to me.
