How was G1 so popular?

I’m curious how G1 initially blew up. I didn’t exist back then, unlike for the live action movies, so I don’t have an idea of what people thought of it initially. Is it the innovation to the genre, the toys, etc.? What shocked the world about G1 when it first came out?
